Today’s Soundtrack – Bad Things by Jace Everett (because today’s beautiful guest is one bad thing, Jules Hutchings.)
Guys! First off, if you didn’t read yesterday’s Zombie Project short, get your ass on over there after reading this. That’s an order, solider.
Secondly, you are the luckiest of luckies, because not only do we have the gorgeous Julie Hutchings with us today, but also the pleasure of the four main characters from her upcoming novel – Ellie, Nicholas, Kat and Roman!
Running Home has just been published by Books of The Dead Press and is now available on Amazon, so sit back, let Julie’s characters entertain you and then get that book on your To Be Read list – you know you’ll wanna!
So I thought we’d kick this thing off with a nod to one of my favourite parts, the Christmas party. Tell me, guys – what are your favourite things about Christmas? That includes you, Jules!
Kat: Home! Well, not really my home, but Connecticut where all my family gets together.
Ellie: Yeah, it’s really nice. Like the Waltons meet rich people, with Kat. But they’re so nice, so don’t look at me like that, Kat.
Jules: I love the lights from the Christmas tree, and having breakfast with my family in our pj’s, opening gifts, and making stockings! Stockings are the best.
Nicholas: I’ve always liked stockings.
Roman: Shut up.
Nicholas: You know what I mean. They always have something really good in them, but you have to dig for it. God, I’m deep.
Ellie: Oh my God.
Haha! You and Nicholas seem to have a pretty good repertoire going on, Ellie. How did it feel, the first time you met?
E: Can I have a new question?
N: Just answer it.
E: Do you mean the first time I met him, or the first time I ran screaming from his creep voice in my head? Because different.
N: The actual meeting makes me sound more attractive.
E: Yeah, because that’s what’s important. I met Nicholas at a party that Kat made me go to–
K: You were so pretty.
E: I was a walking spectacle, maybe. But if I hadn’t gotten roped into going, BY KAT AS USUAL, I wouldn’t have met Nicholas.
N: We would have met anyway. Fate. Unmei—
E: Don’t start with the Japanese. Meeting Nicholas was more than just meeting someone. It was like meeting your future, and being so afraid of it, but wanting to see where it led you. And he was really good looking.
N: I was. I wear a tux like other people wear pajamas.
Arrogant as always, Nicholas. Don’t worry. We love it. But it does seem to bug Roman on occasion…?
R: I am in awe of his arrogance. It’s him. I don’t need to be the center of attention.
N: I have honed arrogance to a skill, really. This way Roman has more time to brood.
Roman, your brooding means you never give much away – I’m curious, what did you think of Kat and Ellie the first time you met?
R: We were in this awful, tiny supermarket when I met them! I knew quite a bit about Ellie already because Nicholas doesn’t stop talking. And also because I know when to listen to him. Kat made me laugh more than I had in a long time.
K: I looked dumb.
R: I know when to look harder.
Speaking of looking harder at people, Ellie, what do you think it was that gave you bad vibes about Lynch from the start?
E: Well, whatever Kat says, that guy was too good to be true to begin with. And he was just dangerous feeling, but without trying.
And Kat, what made you come back to Ossipee? Was it mostly because that’s where Ellie was?
K: I just wanted to be home. Ellie always makes me feel at home, and the timing was perfect when our apartment opened up. I missed it here. I missed being home.
Nicholas’s home seems to hold a homey vibe, one that particularly draws Ellie and Roman – Jules, how did you come up with such a place?
J: It’s my own dream home! A log cabin warmed with a roaring fire, out in the woods, with a loft full of books and a kitchen full of a thousand kinds of teas and coffees. I wanted Ellie to have the home she hadn’t had in so long.
And just a few, fun questions for you all…what are your favourite colours?
N: Green. Brings out my everything and reminds me of the sweater Ellie stole from me.
E: The sweater I replaced with a better one. I’m into green, too. Like the woods.
R: Blue. I miss the ocean.
Favourite food? (Golden Grahams, LOL?)
K: I could literally eat Golden Grahams for every meal of the day.
E: But the pizza. We would need to make room for it.
N: I am a huge pizza fan myself. I spent too long eating sushi in Japan.
R: Steak. As rare as it comes.
K: Ellie, you know you love Poker Face too much to say it’s anything else.
E: Okay, Bieber lover.
N: One song? Over hundreds of years?
R: I love Suspicious Minds.
N: I was interrupted by an interruptor.
R: You weren’t going to pick one.
N: I Wanna Be Sedated. See? Yes I was.
If you had to describe your perfect trip… (Jeez, I feel like I’m trying to fill in forms on a dating site for all of you.)
N: Roman is available for dating. Do you like quiet nights of brooding?
K: Hawaii! I’ve never been, and I always wanted to walk under one of those waterfalls. I would make a grass skirt look amazing, right?
E: I would love to go to Alaska. It looks so peaceful and beautiful.
N: We can go to Alaska.
R: During the light time. I couldn’t take that much darkness. I’d rather go to Paris.
Sad as I am to see you go, guys (and excuse me whilst I fan myself) you’ve got interesting lives to lead (more interesting than mine!) so we better wrap this up – where do each of you see yourselves in five years?
N: Right where I’m supposed to be.
E: Cryptic. Nice. I don’t plan on leaving New Hampshire any time soon.
N: I think we may have a trip to take.
E: I’ll take some convincing.
R: I’ll go back to Japan for a while. I don’t miss it like Nicholas does, but I need to remind myself why I do it all.
N: There’s girls there.
R: I’m not interested in girls.
N: I knew it! I won’t be walking around shirtless anymore.
K: Sorry, I was daydreaming. Of me and Chris, vacationing on a beach somewhere, with a little red haired girl playing in the water. There’s so much waiting for me and him out there, I’d live forever to see it all if I could.
Running Home is out now and available on Amazon – click here to get your hands on that bad boy. Oh, and don’t forget to add it on Goodreads here. Courtesy of Jules, here’s a little blurb to get your juices flowing….
“Death hovers around Ellie Morgan like the friend nobody wants. She doesn’t belong in snowswept Ossipee, New Hampshire; she doesn’t belong in the frigging gift shop she works at, she doesn’t belong with people that death will always take from her, and she definitely does not belong at this black tie party with Kat. But that is where she is, and where he is. Nicholas French, the man who mystifies her with a feeling of home she’s been missing, and impossible knowledge of her troubled soul.”
You know you want it.
